SEATTLE (Reuters) – Gay marriage proponents in the Pacific Northwest cheered a U.S. court ruling on Tuesday that overturned a California ban on same-sex nuptials, in what they saw as boost to their cause a day before a key vote to legalize such unions in Washington state. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found California voters in 2008 had unfairly relegated gay and lesbian couples to a lower status than heterosexual couples when the ban was passed. …

SEATTLE (Reuters) – The two boys of a man who blew up his Washington state home, killing himself and his sons, suffered chop wounds in their final moments and died of smoke inhalation, a law enforcement official said on Monday. Josh Powell was in a bitter custody battle with his missing wife’s parents when he locked his children, 5-year-old Braden and 7-year-old Charles, in his house in Puyallap, Washington, and ignited 10 gallons of gasoline and accelerants on Sunday, police say. …

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Defiant anti-Wall Street protesters in Washington vowed to dig in on Monday as a police midday deadline for them to remove their belongings from two camps within sight of the White House passed without incident. In its first challenge to the demonstrators, U.S. National Park Service said last week it would enforce a ban at noon against sleeping in McPherson Square and Freedom Plaza, where “Occupy” protesters have camped out since October. It ordered sleeping bags, pillows and other gear removed but said tents may remain as a protest symbol if flaps stayed open. …
